Eastern Cross
I chose purpleheart for the cross, a hard, rugged wood with rich churchly coloring to portray this Eastern Orthodox symbol, modeled after a real cross in St. Petersburg, Russia. The cross is topped with a maple onion dome. Purpleheart is a strong and weather resistant wood from Central and South America where it is primarily used for flooring, boat docks, and outdoor furniture. The natural color is a rich purple, but if exposed to ultraviolet light (sunlight) it turns a warm chocolate brown. It is approximately 5" (125 mm) tall. The natural wood is finished with clear acrylic over shellac.
