“Moon Shine” is an unusual snowflake with its new moon shape. Originally, because of it's coarse grain, I ruled out using oak to make my delicate snowflakes. But with perpendicular grain it creates an intriguing God’s eye effect around the center. White oak is the same wood used to make Kentucky whiskey barrels. The complex sugars in white oak, enhanced by toasting or charring the inside of the barrel, age and flavor the world famous Kentucky Bourbon Whiskeys. The snowflake is approximately 4" (100 mm) in diameter and is finished with clear acrylic over shellac.
